COVID was one of the darkest times in America. To use a baseball analogy, the country was designated to the dugout to sit and wait out a lengthy delay. Sports were put on hold as the nation tried to recover from a virus that was rapidly spreading and affecting millions of people.

In baseball, players found different ways to preoccupy themselves while the owners and Players Union tried to negotiate a start date for the 2020 season. Some kept themselves in shape, going to the gym and working out at the local fields. Others stayed home and got caught up with movies or played video games. The veteran players took advantage of some family time, playing with their kids, something they do not often get a chance to do during the season.

However, one player took a unique approach, deciding to use his time to focus on helping others.

“Any high school baseball teams in the Tampa area that would like a volunteer assistant pitching/mental/vibe coach…LET ME KNOW!” he posted on Twitter.

Within 48 hours, more than 70 coaches reached out to the Major League Baseball pitching star asking him to come to the field and work with their teenagers.

In June 2020, Mets star pitcher Marcus Stroman visited the Tampa Heat U-9 Team and gave young athletes the greatest experience of their lives.

“It’s such a cool experience for [the kids],” HEAT bench coach Hans Loebel said. “It’s someone who’s current, someone who, if there was a season going on, (they’d be watching). They’re all going to be Marcus Stroman fans from here on out, and that’s the coolest thing.”
