Death & Grief - The Kaizen Stoic Journal: 1% Better Daily | Memento Mori and Kaizen way combined

Description

Book Synopsis: What is the Japanese "Kaizen"? Why it's important? The word Kaizen can be broken down into "Kai", which means change, and "Zen", which means good, so it literally means good change. This concept is a philosophy that seeks a process of continuous improvement, but not just any improvement, but an improvement of small gradual changes (1% better daily) in one or several fields, that when accumulated produce significant changes. As James Clear explains, in Atomic Habits, if you improve 1% every day, at the end of the year you will end up being almost 38 times better ((1.01)^365).

What is Stoicism?Stoicism first appeared in a school founded by Zenon of Citium in the 3rd century BC. Stoics school tried to teach a philosophy to reach wisdom and happiness, the latter understood as the absence of suffering, and distant from the concept of pleasure. To achieve this absence of suffering they provided many practical tools through their reflections that are still useful more than 2000 years later.First, the Stoics believed that whatever happens, is preceded by a cause, and from this they deduced that destiny could exist. From this reflection is born one of the Stoic principles, the Amor Fati (Love your destiny), which not only says that we must accept what happens to us, but love it. It is a kind of positivism. For example, to be in a traffic jam and be late for work, could be interpreted as something negative or, on the other hand, see it as a lesson (therefore as something positive) and as a few minutes of pause and tranquility, of enjoying the music. This example can also introduce the dichotomy of control, which tells that we should focus only on what we can control, which are our thoughts and our actions, and that the rest should be indifferent to us. We cannot control what happens to us (no traffic jam), but we can control how we react to what happens to us (in this case leaving home earlier next time or enjoying the moment). On the other hand, they also thought that in order to achieve this absence of suffering we should not let ourselves be carried away by our pleasures and fears. A common fear in our society is death, but Stoics say that we should not be scared of it, it's something natural, something that we should accept and partly gives meaning to our life. If we were to live forever, why get out of bed and make the most of our life? Many act as if their life were eternal, but it is not, so... remember your death (Memento Mori).
