But what is it that the fans tune in to see? Is it the dominant defense that holds a team to 10 points, or is it the dominant offense that scores 40 a game? If you were to look at the payrolls for all 32 NFL teams, you would see that the highest-paid player on most teams is the quarterback, followed closely by either a left tackle or a wide receiver. So, where’s the defense? Teams often wait on the defense until there is a great offense in place. But there are only so many points that a team can score before they actually have to stop someone to win games. It is usually the teams that have a balance of offense and defense that end up winning the Super Bowl. In the first 50 Super Bowls, 35 winners had both their offense and defense in the top 10 in the league. What that translates to is that 70% of all the Super Bowl winners had a great offense and a great defense. It is that balance that ultimately leads to victory on the biggest stage. Only 10 times did the team with the best offense in the NFL win the Super Bowl. And only 10 times did the team with the best defense in the league win the Super Bowl. Therefore, having the top offense or defense does not necessarily guarantee a Super Bowl victory. So, then, how does one determine what makes a successful defense? Is it simply the team that gives up the fewest number of points? That is by far the easiest way to determine a good defense. Obviously, if a team only gives up a handful of points a game, they stand a better chance of winning. But what about a team that is able to get multiple turnovers in a game?
