Book Synopsis: ABOUT THE BOOK OF ENOCH
The Book of Enoch is made up of many magnificent works:
The Book of The Watchers tells the story of the fallen angels, as briefly narrated in the sixth chapter of Genesis, who espoused the daughters of men, caused the Nephilim (giants) to appear, and taught men the art of science and magic, leading to the flood and destruction of the human race. The Parables of Similitude reveals the coming of the Messiah and the end of times. This work correlates with the passages in the Holy Scripture and is similar to the apocalyptic book of Saint John the Apostle. The Book of the Courses of the Heavenly Luminaries gives an account of the cosmic bodies- the sun, stars and moon. The Book of the Dream Visions gives an account of the past and future of mankind- from the beginning of mankind to the apocalypse and final judgment. The Prophecy of Weeks bears a close resemblance with the prophetic account contained in the book of Daniel. The last part of the Book of Enoch encourages us to live in accordance with the Divine Will, stressing that we are the people of God and under his governorship. In this section, Enoch shares the wisdom and lessons obtained in his life. In one sentence, the didactic book of Enoch is embellished with the themes of beatitude for the souls of goodwill and malediction for the souls outside the circumference of goodwill.
The Book of Enoch is postulated to have been written by Enoch, one of the earliest seeds of Adam. This book is considered a work of ancient Judaism attributed to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah. Modern historians assert that the book's older parts date from about 300 BC and the new part dates from the first century BC. The book was drafted before the coming of Christ and in the sphere of Jewish culture, yet it is taken into greater account by Christians than Jews. Some of the monumental works of the church fathers draw from the lines of the Book of Enoch. The Epistle of Barnabas, a work of the early second century, contains a great perspective of this book. Church fathers of the early centuries like Clement of Alexandria, Iraenaeus, Tertullian, and Justin Martyr all used the Book of Enoch.
WHAT THE BIBLE TELLS US ABOUT ENOCH
It is important to note that the Bible translation, NIV, uses the name 'Hanok', while older Bible translations use the name Enoch. A few Bible translations use the name Hancock or Hanoch. Enoch is the seventh in line of descent from Adam. The fifth chapter of the book of Genesis tells us about the evening of Enoch's life on earth in this famous passage, "After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God for 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away." Enoch was also the great-great-grandfather of Noah.
