About the Author:
I learned about breath hold training on my first free diving trip. Expecting to learn mostly about how to hold my breath in deep water, I took away a practice that has affected multiple areas of my life, including my athletic performance, meditative practice, and overall health.
Before heading to the ocean for our free dive session, I learned breathing fundamentals and tested my “static” breath hold ability, which means how long I could hold my breath while floating still in a shallow swimming pool.
I could hold my breath for a little over two minutes on that day. I thought this was decent until I learned my instructors could hold their breath for over 5 minutes and that this was normal for more advanced free divers.
I couldn’t imagine how someone could hold their breath for more than twice the time I did in that pool, and I was intrigued to discover what would happen if I adopted breath hold training as a daily practice.
And so I began dry land (outside of the water) static breath hold training, where I’d spend 10-30 minutes each morning in my office, going through breath hold exercises. After just seven days of these exercises, I held my breath comfortably for three minutes!
It was mind-boggling. I was highly skeptical that I’d be able to accomplish this and felt amazing to have proven myself wrong. I also felt great after each session — energized yet relaxed, which piqued my curiosity about how far I could take this.
Two weeks of training later, I increased my breath hold capacity to four minutes. Currently, I can hold my breath for over five minutes, and I’m building up my capacity towards a six-minute breath hold.
I swim and run, and since adopting breathing and breath hold training, I’ve noticed improved cardiovascular performance in both activities. At sub maximal efforts, I no longer feel like I’m starved of oxygen and no longer constantly “grabbing” for air, and I can sustain longer periods of training with lower perceived exertion.
