Sneak PeakAfter we had eaten we made a systematic search of packs and saddle-pockets, and when we had finished there was more of the root of all evil in sight than I have laid my eyes on at any one time before or since. The gold that had drawn us into the game was there in the same long, buckskin sacks, a load for one horse. The government money, looted from the paymaster, part gold coin and part bills, they had divided, and it was stowed in various places. Lessard's saddle-pockets were crammed, and likewise those of Hicks and Gregory. Bevans' , which I had taken from his dead horse, yielded a goodly sum. Altogether, we counted some seventy-odd thousand dollars, exclusive of the gold-dust in the sacks.
SynopsisRaw Gold tells the story of a cowhand called Flood returned from Fort Walsh during the gold rush carrying cash as payment for transporting horses. He encounters former police officer Gordon MacRae, a Mountie. The two men had known each other for a long time; they used to work as cowpunchers in Texas. They stumble into a dying prospector who informs them that at Writing-On-Stone, he and his previously deceased partner had concealed gold worth thousands of dollars. Immediately after MacRae and Flood discover the gold, it’s quickly stolen from them again. Thus, the plot is set in motion. As soon as they learn that they are wanted for robbing the Fort's paymaster, things get even worse. The rolling hills and valleys of the surrounding prairie are crawling with Mounties in search of them. A third man, Piegan, joins them as they go in search of the robbers themselves.
