Book Synopsis: Kreyòl Modèn presents a fresh, yet proven way of studying Haitian-Creole. It uses the modern spelling and consistent grammatical features to make it an authority in learning, discussing and using the Haitian language. It is a tool for both native speakers and second language learners to develop the knowledge of the language. Its grammatical structure is inspired by the early Haitians way of speaking the language and is a spiritual heritage left for all Haitians and those who want to be inspired by a unique language. It is supplemented with a variety of exercises in the accompanied workbook. The book is an awesome tool for Haitian (Creole) teachers, students, researchers and those working in Haiti. It is built with the spirit of being a tool for development, missions, studies and overall curiosity. Many of its features are designed to slowly introduce the user to Haiti.

• Fraz kle – Key sentences

These are sentences we use as primers to help you practice sentences and they include grammatical structure. So, the grammar is introduced to you little by little before you get to it, you are used to the structure. Recordings are available so you will hear the instructor read the sentences. You will repeat them and then you will record them. That is how someone will know you are pronouncing the words well. Your recordings are graded to give you a grade in the class.

Usage

That is where some terms and special vocabulary are explained. They are usually an integral part of the chapter.

Replacement - Ranplasman

This feature is to build your vocabulary within contexts and your grammatical skills. They mirror the Fraz Kle to allow you to drill the grammatical structure, sentence structure and build vocabulary. Recordings are available so you may hear the instructor read the sentences. You will repeat them and then you will record them and have someone verify your pronunciation. Doing these exercises regularly will allow you to pronounce Haitian-Creole with ease in a matter of a few months.

Gramè - Grammar

All languages are built on a grammatical structure. Haitian (HC) is not different. The grammar in HC is a model of simplicity; yet, it is sophisticated and follows a regular pattern. It is much easier than any other language grammar you have learned or spoken. We have our Haitian ancestors to thank for that. Recordings of the grammar are available for you to acquire. But, you are able to read the explanations and understand.

Egzèsis – Exercises

The exercises are meant to ensure that you have the concepts down well. They are available in the workbook: kaye.

Word Power

This feature helps you imagine how Haitian words correspond to English words and you can build new vocabulary from there.

End of Chapter Assessment

150 to 300 word essays on what you have learned in each chapter.

Vokabilè - Vocabulary

This gives you the meaning of the words used in the chapter. We will provide a glossary at the end of the book as well for you to check out. The Founder of the Haitian Studies program at KU and I wrote the first great dictionary in HC in 1996. Since then Professor Freeman has revamped the dictionary and enhanced it. You can purchase all the volumes at the KU Bookstore in Lawrence.

Nòt Kiltirèl

We often add relevant cultural notes to the lessons and also some proverbs. The proverbs are a simple way to say much in few words. Proverbs: Each chapter ends with two or three general proverbs.

Glossary (Creole-English and English-Creole)

The end of the book has a mini dictionary of some of the words and terms use in the book.
