The date was September 9, 2009. The deafening chants of “Derek Jeter” could be heard sweeping all across the Bronx, let alone Yankees Stadium. As Derek Jeter stood at the plate and looked up to the mound at Tampa Bay Rays’ pitcher Jeff Niemann, he knew he had already compiled two hits that night and was within just one hit of tying Lou Gehrig as the all-time Yankees hit leader.
As flashbulbs illuminated the stadium, Jeter stared down the pitch from Niemann and laced an opposite-field line drive inside the first base line and past infielder Chris Richard. While it was the start of an inning that would lead to a Yankees comeback victory, it was something much more—it was the coronation of a Yankees legend.
The fans roared so loudly that the stadium shook for the first time since it had been opened earlier that year. The “Derek Jeter” chants only got louder and more deafening as he saluted the 45,848 fans in attendance who had witnessed history. For the 2,721st time, Jeter recorded a hit as a New York Yankee, the same number of hits as Lou Gehrig. It was only two days later, on the historic date of September 11th, that Jeter officially passed Lou Gehrig and became the all-time hits leader in Yankees history. He passed DiMaggio, passed Bernie, passed Mickey, passed the Babe, and then finally passed Lou. Later that season, Jeter won his fifth and final World Series ring to help culminate what many would call the “perfect career.”

Before his career ended, he would eclipse 3,465 hits, making him an instant Hall of Famer and earning him a spot in Monument Park at Yankees Stadium, or what some now refer to as the “House that Jeter Built.”
