An excerpt from this David Ortiz biography: An important day for the citizens of Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic, is November 18, 1975. It was on this day that David Américo Ortiz-Aria was born to Enrique and Angela Rosa. David was the oldest of four children and distinguished himself from the other family members because of his peaceful demeanor. Additionally, David, as a child, was very easy-going and was known for his sense of humor. Given his outgoing personality, it was always easy for him to make friends. David's father, Enrique, (nicknamed Leo) had a tremendous influence on his son’s life. Leo had a great love for the game of baseball and played in professional and semi-professional leagues in the Dominican Republic. As the saying goes, like father like son, and Leo’s appreciation and enjoyment of the game became his son's passion as well. The Dominican Republic is not a wealthy nation. Consequently, the early life of David Ortiz was one of dealing with the harsh consequences of being impoverished at a very young age. Fortunately, given his personality and positive outlook on life, David Ortiz was able to rise above his poverty and survive the harshness of life. Coming from a family of four and not having discretionary money to purchase things such as baseballs, David Ortiz recalled the time when his little sister received a new doll. On a celebrated holiday known as Three Kings Day, his sister, Albania, received a new doll. David figured that his sister no longer needed the old doll and so he proceeded to cut the head off of the doll and used the doll's head as a baseball.
