Etiquette is the code of behavior that defines expectations for social behavior according to accepted norms within a society, social class, or grouping. The French word étiquette, meaning tag or label, has been used for this purpose since 1750. During the Enlightenment era, the self-conscious process of adopting polite norms and behaviours became the indicator of a genteel member of the upper class. Hence, the aspiring middle class bourgeoisie tried to identify with the elite by adopting their artistic preferences and standards of behavior. This resulted in a preoccupation with precise rules of etiquette: when and how to show emotion; elegant dress; graceful conversation; and how to behave with charm and courtesy, especially towards women. Books on etiquette instruct in these norms of behavior.
