In this first of two volumes, they focus on problems where each element in the set to be partitioned is represented by a single parameter, that is, a one-dimensional point. They develop basic theory and methods to solve the optimal partition problem as a foundation for solving the multi-parameter partition problem in the second volume, which also deals with points in high-dimensional space.
