Description
In 2011, Pongo travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo to photograph the country’s general election and its impact on society. He soon became aware that, as a European educated photographer he could neither define which stories mattered nor were they his to tell. As his awareness of this increased, he came to terms with the limits of photography to show ‘the truth’ as well as his own limitations in accessing and understanding the environment, bias, and stereotypes. The project evolved into the photographs which form his first book The Uncanny.
Details
The Uncanny is not just a book of stunning photographs, it is a powerful visual journey that takes you deep into the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Through the lens of talented Belgian photographer Léonard Pongo, you will discover a country rich in culture, diversity, and complexity. Each photograph tells a story, capturing moments of everyday life and revealing the true essence of Congolese society.
What sets The Uncanny apart is Pongo's unique approach to photography. Instead of imposing his own perspective, he collaborated with friends and family in the Congo, allowing them to guide his exploration. This resulted in a genuine representation of the region, untainted by foreign biases or preconceptions. By immersing himself in their vision, Pongo not only captured the beauty of the Congo but also gained a deeper understanding of his own heritage.
This book is not just a collection of pretty pictures; it is a thought-provoking reflection on the limitations of photography as a medium. Pongo's journey forced him to confront his own assumptions and question the role of an outsider in documenting another culture. The Uncanny challenges traditional notions of truth and the responsibility of the photographer, inviting you to explore the complexities of representation and perception.
If you are curious about the Democratic Republic of Congo, if you appreciate photography that goes beyond surface-level beauty, or if you are simply seeking a thought-provoking visual experience, The Uncanny is a must-have for your collection.
